The Flea Wars

All for nothing. We gave Mr. Peanut a bath last night to help rid him of fleas. He was a very good boy and took it well but there are still fleas I see later on. We treated his coat with an insecticide that prevents the eggs from attaching. Still fleas though. Arthur was picking them off as much as he could. It looks like I bought the wrong products basically. I called the vet and they just say "bring him in." I was told to never bring him in unless absolutely necessary because he has to be gassed to be examined. So. No help there. (I could bring him in and gas/traumatize him but is it necessary at this point? He is HORRIBLE at the vet. Like out of control. There are warning stickers all over his chart. The vet says to not even worry about the shots so much, seriously, because bringing him into the vet makes him so psycho.) Anyway, Step 2 is to buy a frontline or Advantage type topical treatment. Arthur is going to see if the vet near his office will sell it to us. Or I can order online. Poor Mr. Peanut. I feel so sorry for the little guy. I have to treat the lawn today and see if I can knock the flea situation back out there. I want to be able to let him out and have fun but this flea thing is no good. I think it is time for the crazy frontline poisons. They work for dogs, right?

I can say that Peanut has nice, soft, fluffy, nice smelling fur from his flea bath at least....

I am getting obsessed about this flea thing. Can you tell? Part of me is like, well, I could just make a vet appointment but ??

fb, frontline is GREAT. really werks. but i don't think you can get it without first seeing a vet, right?

dubz, it looks like i CAN buy it online actually. ?? Through 1-800-petmeds whatever.

We buy prescripton food for Peanut at a vet in Manhattan so Arthur is going to talk to them today. I know it sounds crazy - my reluctance to take him to the vet, but they have to gas him and it's this whole thing. No food for 12 hours, extra trauma, extra expense, all for flea problems? It seems excessive. I could call my actual vet and leave her a message. Maybe she would give the prescription without seeing him due to his history -bladder exploding on the operating table, etc.??

Aw, poor Peanut. The vet trauma definitely seems excessive, especialy if he's gonna keep going outside, because he'll probably just keep getting new fleas. You could bathe him and simultaneously bomb and vacuum your house and never let him out again, but then he'd probably be sad. . .

i don't think you should take peanut to the vet... not if he's traumatized by it... and if you can get frontline online. or the manhattan vet might be able to dispense it so you can get it today. i hate fleas! giant bummer.

the frontline/advantage thing, which goes into their hair/oil glands sounds really promising- kills new fleas within a few hours - or so it claims. I am going to treat my yard also. good stuff poison bath. He has to be let outside JD. I can't deprive him of his fun, you know? He loves it so much out there.

Hi FB, my cat came home from a vet one time infested with fleas. Now this is horrifying, but fleas do NOT live on the kitty - they live in the carpet or in bedding and when Peanut cruises by they hop on for a ride and a drink then hop off, carouse and lay eggs. Lots and lots of eggs. We had to bomb the house to get rid of the fleas unto the 7th generation and then move on to a flea collar. The fleas have never been a problem since. Hope this helps...

hi trees, yes, I understand this. we'll have some cleaning to do and bombing perhaps. I sprayed down the only carpet last night and I can seriously bomb that room if it becomes necessary. From what I understand - if we eliminate mr peanut as a source of food, make him repellent, that will go a long way in reducing the population of fleas i think. i know they live forever in the carpet etc, but the first step is to make him not food. i don't think i have been bitten indoors yet - only in the yard. but it's gonna be a big pain. all this flea biz. live and learn, right?
