wizard

the wizard is back - requiring the fb to go to the doom temple to procure the gold coins (which were at least acknowledged and spoken of). i don't know what to do with this wizard. his spells and charms seem ineffective and it might be best if the fb was to fly free, but to where? what to do about the secret project of the pillows? curses! the wizard is anxious to spy on the newborn relics. treading in unknown waters. not safe maybe, but it is hard for the FB to be mean. why is this wizard so goofed up? why can't it just be fine?

basically i am getting "free space" to display my curios and relics and some magic purchasing did occur. if i have more coins maybe i can deal? but i sense a dead end on the other end. no promotion besides - just embarrassments and annoyances? GAH. one step at a time.

what to do about the pillows????!!! they must remain top secret, yes?

yes i think so. esp. if you are thinking of leaving, hide them.

I agree with MM. The pillows have nothing to do with this wizard.

except that they look exactly like my art but sort of different and if they go outside to a place they may be discovered? perhaps this is a good escape hatch plan? anyway, i only have one completed so far so there is time to figure out....

oof. I see. I am unknowing in the ways of relic business but I am beginning to see the dilemma.

Still I don't think you have to tell him. He would just mangle it all up. The likelihood of him finding out is not very. Also, worst case scenario, if he did, and you are still represented by him, you just make the strongest case for why they are not "art" and basically tell him to f off. How about that for a diseased negative attitude?

FB, I would just proceed with your excellent plans solo.

i don't know what I am doing with the pillows in the end. so for now it is ok. they are almost like sketches or something for me and i am having fun working on them. so maybe I sell them secretly for a bit. see how it goes. maybe i tell the wizard i am doing it and if he has a problem then i leave. i don't really care - but first i have to get my money.

mm, yes, i think you are right. my association with him, now that the show is over, is probably more negative than anything. i may see if he can sell anything through the next few months to help gauge. but i may just go ahead with my pillow plan and see the shit hit the fan. in one way - maybe i am generating more demand for my "real" art - getting name out there?

i want to show the pillows as art, honestly. with randy wray's sculptures i am thinking.

Still it seems you owe the wizard little. But this is merely my poisoned attitude. Maybe if he continues to sell for you and pay you all will be fine?

It seems there is a lot that can be done with the pillows. . . .that you have many options. I still agree with MM about keeping it to yourself until maybe you have more.

What if you did both. . . show as art and sell outside the system? Would that eff things up too much? I think that would be crazy. You say what your art is. . .not someone else.

I am naive and idealistic that way.

you're right. i mean if i was offered some other situation right now i would take it because he is retarded and i just don't see it doing much for me long term. but if he can sell a bit more work and doesn't torment me then maybe it is ok.

sometimes i think i might be able to sell more work on my own? i turned down two showing opportunities in d.i.y. stores in kentucky and milwaukee to save my work for NYC. and now that i am represented or whatever i can't sell in that arena because it isn't 'professional art arena" you know what I am saying. i hate all these stuped distinctions.

It's just STUPED. ha.

krix, the problem is price. the cost of my "real" art and what I could charge for a painting. the wizard asks a bunch, which i guess he has to to make it seem legit but then it screws it all up for me. but if i keep my identity secret and just call the pillows by a brand and leave it at that i could get away with it. but it is also publicity so maybe attaching my name is part of the draw. so confusing. wizard is so out of it that he probably wouldn't hear about it forever so maybe i shouldn't worry to much. sometimes i wish he would just go away - don't even care about the money.

But if you slowly begin to disassociate yourself with him and take control of the non art showing situations, then when you hook up with a gallery, those situations will be pre-existing. You know what I mean? It's not sneaky, necessarily, it's just taking control of it. If you make the pillows a brand, it can still be attached to your name. But you would have to make certain obvious distinctions between the brand/functional stuff and the art stuff - otherwise the people who payed a lot for your "art" will get pissed and rightly so. It is an interesting problem. I would like to know what other people would say. I certainly have no idea, am just thinking it out as I write here....hope you don't mind.

On the other hand, if you were working with a gallery you really liked, what would be the problem of giving them a cut of any sales? It could be like a print edition, sold in settings other than the gallery, but the gallery and whatever selling venue split their cut? And you still get 50%??? I don't know.

i know. i am finding it hard to make a distinction between the "real" art and the pillow art. It's subtle. God - it is soo confusing. i think i will just make some more of the pillows and see what people think. maybe tomorrow i will post some images of them. i am scared but will do. then you can see if they are too similar to real art. i might need help.

it is all context. part of the draw of this project for me is playing with context - high/low - expectations. what the difference is between a painting and a pillow if any. why is a painting on canvas valued in one way.

irregardless i discovered the other day that it is fun to paint on brocade. thinking about doing some paintings/embroideries with it. so the pillows got me there. maybe i will just end up giving the pillows away as xmas gifts. FUck.

ho ho ho FB! I want to pre-order a christmas brocade goat pillow.

i have one half done featuring a long horned sheep and a sparkly geometric shape. i will post pics tomorrow.

i am also excited to get started on my tea towels! good for the gallery setting i think.
