how things change

mm and i shared a room for our thesis exhibit some moons ago - well, many moons ago. we were hopeful and ambitious and proud. we wanted to strut our stuff although we were somewhat freaked out. (i hope it is ok that i am speaking for you here mm) anyway, we had the show, time passed, not much came of it. we didn't suck.

I noticed today on artnet a collection of photos from the most recent thesis opening at our alma mater. here is a link: http://www.artnet.com/magazine/people/barone/barone1-9-06.asp

I don't think ANY dealers came to our thesis show. My how things change. now = feeding frenzy and I am left to feel saggy, old, and washed up.

gosh, does that sound bitter? maybe i am a little. it is just a whole different scenario now it seems. but actually, it is all ok. i am glad to have been left in the wilds alone in many ways because the relics have improved greatly undercover all these years me thinks. I dunno.

best not to dwell on these things, fb... it could be oh so much worse. but hearing about how many former schoolmates are showing at Mary Boone etc. is also a little disconcerting... WHY NOT SLOTH??? Don't answer that.

Ultimately you just have to focus on what's going on au shaq. That is ALL that matters.

No truer words sloth. It is hard to figure out.

Thanks for saying that PD!

Yes FB, it was a strange time, those many moons ago and it continues to be strange today. No dealers came to our show, no. Not like it is now. But I am also glad I didn't show that early work. I think my work is better now, I agree about having the extra time too develop. Just looking on the bright side (for once). Maybe I am staving off feelings of getting old too as bday is next freaking week. Oh well.

It is true about finding the self by yourself in the shack. But sometimes you go and it just seems like an insurmountable task to figure out why you are making these things again. Always back and forth, feeling happy to make, then feeling sick to the stomach at the thought of so much wasted narcissistic effort.

Thinking about our Thesis show makes me happy though. The night of the opening was fun. I can't believe how long ago it was though. PUKERS!!!! 5 years.

It was a cute room, FB & MM circa 2000....

WOW 12, PD!!! What were you like 13 when you got your MFA? That shit is f-ed up.

We must forge onward! Onward and shackward!

Eh. I saw that too fb (I'm hiding out at the Castle right now.) The only dealers I saw were one super-sucky couple whose gallery it is agreed smells and another youngish gallery who was probably friends with 1-more of the artists on display. Seems like business as usual to me.
I feel like you need a pep talk fb.
Am I going to have to shout slogans at you?
We all know you make top notch relics (we being valuable art world artists including burrito brother) and it's only a matter of time before rich homes across the country are littered with them. So don't fret about 'gossip columns' and keep your eyes on the prize!

Sorry BB. I meant my post to be less about me personally and just the general nature of things. the fact that there are pics on artnet of a hunter opening is just so wacked in comparison to the response i felt the show i was in got years ago. it's ok. it's just the way things are now... whatevs.

But thanks for your kind words!

FB, Hunter is a scary-seeming place now. I have a feeling we would like it less than we did then, when we were the only 2 semi-figurative artists, it seemed, in the whole program. Now it is over-run with cutesy figuration and with all the dealers swarming, what if all our studiomates and everyone we knew was getting shows but us? That would suck an even bigger suck. It could always be worse. Please remember that. At times it can be very comforting. It is a slogan in its own way.

PD, I have not read Robert Coover, but UF just got a book by him, so its funny you mention it. I will check out.

God I really want to order like 10 million of Corny's How's my painting? Call 1-800-Eat-Shit bumper stickers. That was the funniest thing I ever done saw.

fairy butler said...

i want one to cover up the horrendous bumper sticker currently on my car that says "got breastmilk". can you believe i drive around with that on my car? corny's are 300,000 times better.

fairy butler said...

and yes mm. if we went back to hunter WE would probably be the ones making the stripe paintings now. ha.

I have totally thought that - that we would rebel and be post-painterly abstracters. Funny....

Got Breastmilk? I remember you telling me this before. Perhaps the neighborhood weirdos who ask if they can walk with you a while have scoped you out in your car and took it as an accidental invitation? I advise you to cover this sticker at once. I am worried for your sexual safety.

I'm not sure the idea of breast milk is a turn on. Even to vagrants...
And hey, at least you didn't go to Pratt like BB. They literally wanted you to work in a vaccuum. Hoovering out your soul and personality until you were Brice Marden minus the drugs.
And I don't think it's changed at all in 5 years!
So if you really want to cloister yourself, go there or, U. of Alaska, it's pretty much the same.
I'm not bitter though (*snicker*)

BB I disagree. Breast Milk is the tastiest milk around.

how is it that this awful embarrassment is still on my car. i have an old sonic youth bumper sticker but putting that on instead seems lame also. I need the corny sticker.

me too, fairy. can't concentrate on this silly work stuff. in a long-past life, the sloth-mobile sported a bumper sticker that said "bark if you love jesus." what can I say... i was a pup meself...
