odes and concerns

Odes......

the hold steady. i am going to see them again next week @ warsaw the night before t-giving. there are still tix. come! witness the rock anthem and bourbon dance. it will be time to get rowdy and ride the electric bull. slashed jeans.

Joanna Newsome. went to see her perform on monday with mm & uf. Holy shit. Seriously, she is a genius. we all belive it. almost frightening. she played with a band some of the new stuff from the new album - intricate, gorgeous, complex, beautiful. the arrangements included harp, banjo, saw, drums and acoustic guitar. it sounds like it could be precious or trendy bad but it is not. it is all in service to some freaky talent. go and see her perform. what else can i say?

The Annuals The record is called Be He Me. Great. Like a more indie rock animal collective, kind of - with moments of Elephant Six stuff thrown in. I've really been digging it in the studio. Can't find a stream of it though. (not looking hard though)

Concerns....

i am turning into a hack painter. it'll be ok. hopefully.

hi fairy, thanks for the recommendations! Maybe possibly we will go the hold steady & ride the bull with you...

The Knife's latest album, "Silent Shout," has lots of eerie, distorted-voice stuff, if you're into it; I'm not so much, although the title track is amazing. Their earlier album, "Deep Cuts," is a much better; totally worth getting. We went to see them at Webster Hall a coupla weeks ago, where they dressed in weird monkey costumes and did verbatim song treatments... it was like listening to their CDs on a really good stereo, total waste of money. I guess that's the risk with electronica, but they could have changed it up maybe just a little? Adam sez Lady Sovereign album's not worth it, but it might just be a taste thing.

The new Joanna Newsom album is called "Ys." From what I understand, that's pronounced "ees." But I think that when you say it, you should shriek it in a pterydactyl cry about four octaves higher than your normal register that you prolong for at least eight seconds.

Not a hack. NO WAY. You are rocking out in your studio. your paintings are beautiful, energetic, personal, funny, strange, odd. You've gone to that strange netherworld that is risky and wonderful.

hams, you are the sweetest. can i just tell you that we found the puurrfect spot for the cat-snake up high surveying the dining room. we LOVE it!

sloth, think about coming next week. it will be fun-- i promise!! thanks for the advice on the knife. it could be that in rotation the 3 songs i have are great but a whole album is maybe too much. the distorted voice stuff is so not my thing usually but i dunno, it's kind of interesting here somehow. i hate going to shows where they just put the record on.

FB, your dragon is above our couch so that we can worship the sun with him. He happily dominates the living room. Whenever I look at it, I smile. We love it!

I have issues w/ THS..too much mention of Charlamain and the E-Street band...but they are hella-tight live. I esp. like it when he thanks his mom for comming to the show...she has never missed a show, and then points to some random person in the audience. hehe. I could have given you the annuals when you were over to copy that painting...you even turned down the free 7"! : )

You are not a hack painter...please tie the red bandana around your left thigh and crank THS and move that paint about!

I know I have plugged this b4, but check out some of these in-studio performances. watching the TVOTR really made me love them even more..their lead singer is the shit.

FB--you are not a hack. I love what you do and how you think about painting. I will try not to be jealous that Hams owns an original FB. I am sure there are many more beautiful relics in your shack since my last visit.

i agree with peeds. you have such talent and imagination, fb... and a great hand... the only way you could turn into a hack is if you let your day job define you.

oof! thanks guys for the props, but seriously not phishing for compliments. i should have explained myself more from before. i feel like a hack because i've been working on a commission/specific thing and there's a deadline and stuff. so it feels different working this way. the stakes are changed and i have to get this done and want to make the person happy, etc. it's not all up to me exactly. UGH.

i just finished option 2 and this one is more awkward and hard won but i like it better i think. i have no idea if they are gonna go for it however.

i'm working too hard. me needs break. me needs funz. i want to work on my new checkerboard vase with persian cat embroidery but no time...

also, let it be known, if you want to trade relics talk to me. i have a small selection up for grabs. trying to lighten the load in the shack. somehow the crowding = psychologically damage.
