Spanx!

oh blog friends, you are too good to me! Thanks for the kick ass supportive comments re:the 'handmaiden' yadda yadda stuff. It is really helping me with the confidence. (Yes, Sloth! I will be like Picasso. but really, what a great example. he was such an exuberant guy who did what he f*cking wanted to. And I've been thinking about matisse too - he was still 'painting' but the emphasis in some of his work is very decorative. anyway..)

I went to the studio last night and thought about the possibilities for a long while, making lists, sketching ideas, thinking about the options. I am going to approach this as an art experiment/project and see how it goes - not quitting the beige yet, but just trying something else for a couple of months rather than make painting paintings. Just thinking about buying loads of crazy fabric and trim and crap is so exciting to me - to be able to work with this stuff in a slightly different format - smaller and objecty rather than the fictive painting space just to see how it opens up the process. I can buy flourescent mesh, lavender sweatshirt fabric, brocade, lace, etc etc. And I can make ruffles, and play with the 3-dimensional aspect of fabric which leads me back to more possiblities for the "real art." So I think this is going to be good, good times. And I get to use the sewing machine again. When i used to sew clothes ages ago i always most enjoyed seeing how the pieces fit together - working with the fabrics to create space in a way. It is very satisfying. so.

The only slight issue i can see coming up is the price of this things when i try to sell them. my plan is to keep track of my hours and pay myself the same rate as beige and then price them based on that. If it works as a commercial enterprise or not is anyone's guess but regardless it is going to be a good endeavor I think.

Thanks for listening to me. I am fired up.

Fairy, make sure you charge enough for your hand-crafted beauties! I can't wait to see how things turn out. It sounds like you are inspired. Periods of intense doubt always come before the bursts of inspiration and new ideas. I am excited for you, my pretty.

i know mm. I anticipate that they will be in the 200-300 dollar range. scary! but maybe some can be less. I am trying to scale down some of the intricate hand work - do less of it and make it more effective in these.

My first ones are going to feature large pentagrams on dark satin with flowers maybe. I also want to do goat heads and cat heads.

Me too me too! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

HFP & i passed by a shop yesterday. It was called "spandex world." It was full of amazing, glittery, furry, shiny fakeness. I was suddenly filled with the desire to throw away the paint and just use spandex as a medium from now on. Materials can be so intoxicating.

Love the goat & cat head idea. Sounds delightfully strange.

i love that there is an actual shop called spandex world!

this project is going to be tricky in some ways... in that i will need to economical time-wise with making these. i think it will be interesting to approach from this angle (or frustrating) but something will definitely be made regardless!

Sounds so exciting FB!! I love the pentagram and goat head ideas. I don't think 200 and 300 bucks is too much for your hand-made gems.
